In my younger days, my wife and I were very disciplined in putting a monthly budget together. Once a week, we would sit down and ensure that we had all the charges for that week recorded accurately. We treated credit card purchases as a cash purchase against a line item budget allowance. We highlighted these purchases which made it very easy to compare the charge against our monthly statement. This additional step ensured that were were recording purchases accurately while serving as an additional check to ensure there wasn't something amiss. We occasionally missed recording a charge, so we would apply it to the following month's projection. If necessary, we forced ourselves to cut something out of the budget for the month in order to accommodate this additional item. On several other occasions, we were either overcharged or in one case, made no such purchase. This process kept us accountable and served as an early warning system for identity theft.
